Xochimilco is one of those places you should visit at least once in your life—not only because it is recognized by UNESCO as a World Cultural Heritage Site, but also because of the unique beauty and magic of its canals and its people.

Arriving in Xochimilco for the first time is unique and unforgettable. Seeing all the colorful trajineras lined up at the docks, with mariachis and norteña music playing in the background, is a magical experience in which you truly feel like you’re inside a scene from one of those Mexican telenovelas so many of us grew up with in Latin America.

To see all the tourist attractions of the Xochimilco canals, we recommend the traditional tour. For 2 hours you can travel the region’s traditional canals, see a replica of the ‘Island of the Dolls,’ take in the nature of the beautiful ‘Caltongo Lagoon,’ and visit the greenhouses to admire and buy Xochimilco’s typical plants.

However, if you don’t have much time, we recommend the basic tour: for 1 hour you can enjoy your trajinera ride to the rhythm of norteña music, marimba, and mariachis, and also visit the replica of this enigmatic island.

There is a wide range of trajinera tours, with options for every taste and for however much time each visitor has. We recommend booking your chosen tour in advance.

Don’t forget that a must-do stop, before or after your trajinera tour, is visiting the traditional Mexican handicrafts stall, watching the traditional ‘Voladores de Papantla,’ and trying a delicious ‘elote con chile’ (corn on the cob with chili).

Venture out and enjoy a unique, local Mexican experience!
